Western Hills Garden
in the News

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat ran a flattering piece on the reopening of Western Hills Garden for 2014 on April 3.

Owner Tim Szybalski and garden manager and volunteer coordinator Stacie Miller were interviewed about Western Hills Garden on the “In the Garden” morning show on San Francisco radio station KSFO (560 kHz AM) on August 18, 2013. The guest host was Sara Godwin, a writer and frequent visitor to Western Hills. The show airs on Sundays from 8 to 11am, and the interview was from 9:30–10:30. Listen to the first half-hour segment of “In the Garden” on KSFO (12.5MB mp3 file), then listen to the second half-hour (12.8MB mp3 file).

Western Hills Garden owners and staff attended the Garden Conservancy’s “Sustaining the Garden: Preservation Weekend 2012” in Chicago during September, where a number of gardens around the country were featured, including Western Hills. The seminars and tours highlighted the importance of gardens in the community and provided practical advice and networking opportunities.

In mid-September 2012, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat published an inspiring homage to Western Hills Garden and its volunteers.

The garden was featured by Pacific Horticulture magazine in July 2012 as a “Late Summer” destination: “… you’ll find a tranquil space with plants and trees of all types along meandering paths.”

The reopening of Western Hills Garden has been noted by several different sources:

The San Francisco Chronicle featured the reopening of Western Hills Garden in its Home and Garden section on July 15, 2012 … “Beloved plot reborn”.

National Public Radio KRCB in Cotati, California, ran a very flattering interview with the owners in July 2012 which can be heard on its website.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat announced the June 2, 2012, opening“legendary”“remarkable”.

Local NPR station KRCB also featured the restoration of Western Hills Garden in a two-part series broadcast January 17–18, 2012.

The change in ownership of Western Hills was the catalyst for the appearance of several articles about the garden during August and September 2010. A San Francisco Chronicle article by Joe Eaton and Ron Sullivan was published on 9/1/10 along with nine photos; a Lamorinda Patch article by Lou Fancher was published on 8/29/10 (Lamorinda includes Lafayette, Orinda, and Moraga in the San Francisco East Bay Area); and a Santa Rosa Press Democrat article by Meg McConahey was published on 8/15/10. The Fall 2010 issue of the “Garden Conservancy News” (Vol. 21, No. 2) also included an article about Western Hills (568K pdf).
