Western Hills Garden

News from the Garden

Issue 14 I November 2023

Gardens invoke peace.

When we heard that President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping found a common meeting ground at the peaceful Filoli estate and gardens, we understood. We know that gardens heal, teach, inspire, and please, and it was satisfying to see that two of the most prominent world leaders (and their teams) felt that as well.

Today, as we approach Thanksgiving and the season of giving, we’re writing to invite you to contribute to the Western Hills Garden Preservation & Growth Fund –– campaign to provide the resources we need to steward this historic place into the future.

If you’ve ever tended a garden, you know how much work it entails. And while we’ve learned a lot over the last two years and have strong momentum, the size and scope of the project are too much for us to handle alone.

It costs about $150,000 per year to operate Western Hills with our current, minimal staffing and overhead. So far, we are primarily self-funded.

To provide for long-term upkeep and improvements, and to ensure the garden’s longevity as a community resource, we are hoping to raise $50,000 by year’s end, and $300,000 over the next year.

As an incentive to our community, one of our generous donors has offered a matching grant for the first $10k raised, and we recently received a $10k grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. So we are on our way! But we need your help.

 GIVE A GIFT TODAY

With your contribution, you’ll join a group of special donors who have a deep interest in the value of Western Hills as a local landmark, a site of national horticultural interest, and a significant community asset. All gifts to the Preservation & Growth Fund are tax-deductible and any amount is helpful.

At the garden, you’ll see the direct impact of your support:

  • Additional garden staff including a Horticultural Director.

  • A water tank and irrigation upgrades to better manage consumption and mitigate fire risk.

  • An ADA-accessible restroom and other accessibility upgrades.

  • Proactive tree management including structural and aesthetic pruning.

  • Maintenance and improvements to the glass house and propagation house.

Western Hills Garden has held a special place in the Northern California community for more than 60 years. As the next generation of leadership, we are committed to bringing forth new ideas to build on that legacy and provide ways for people to connect and commune in nature.

Join us as we grow a garden that heals, teaches, and inspires. We thank you in advance for your support. And come visit us soon!

Shout outs.

This month we lift a glass to Kat Gritt. Kat is a Western Hills Garden intern studying to be an arborist at Merritt College as her second career. She is an incredible asset helping us assess tree health, improve our tree management practices, and inventory our current tree collection (825 specimens and counting). Through her introductions we have met leadership at Sonoma County Tourism and participated in a design workshop with Merritt College faculty to consider how to redesign the area where we lost two large trees last winter. She is a joy, and we are grateful she makes the drive every week from Berkeley to help out. High five Kat! If you’re curious—click through to see some of the “trees of significance” in our inventory.

Appreciations to you.

We have so much to be thankful for and offer heartfelt appreciations to all of you — those who have visited and shared feedback, those who have brought surprise gifts, those who have shared stories and legacy artifacts, those who smile from ear to ear as they receive their parting bouquet, those who volunteer, those who work here, those who donate, those who help us learn, and those who spread the word about the garden. Our tribe has grown exponentially in the last year.

We remain humbled and honored to steward the legacy of this incredible place and hope you will come experience it again soon. May you have a wonderful feast this week. We will raise a glass to you all.

Gratefully,
Hadley and Kent
