60th Anniversary Celebration Saturday May 25 and Sunday May 26, 2019
10am – 4pm each day
Western Hills Garden, a “landmark” garden in the Redwoods, turns 60 years old in 2019. To celebrate, on May 25 and 26 we had speakers, tours, and panels to tout the garden’s past and future. An excellent selection of plants was offered for sale to support the garden restoration effort.
Celebrants enjoyed self-guided tours of the garden as well as “Walk and Talk” tours and speakers during the weekend. Sean Hogan, owner of Cistus Design Nursery and noted horticulturist, was the featured speaker both mornings. He has been associated with the garden from the early days and has helped with the restoration.
A schedule of events has information about speakers and invited guests. On 5/25/19, Sean Hogan spoke at 11am, composting expert Dick Miner led a workshop at 1pm, and natural-landscape design expert Stew Winchester led a trees tour with Hogan at 2pm. On 5/26/19, Hogan continued his discussion at 11am, and landscape photographer Saxon Holt spoke at 2pm.
The plant sales featured iconic and historic plants from Western Hills Garden, as well as modern cultivars compatible with the garden. Two nurseries participated:
Cistus Design Nursery is a retail micro-nursery located near Portland, Oregon, offering Mediterranean climate, southern hemisphere, hardy tropical plants, and more.
Western Hills Nursery has been rejuvenated. Volunteers have propagated plants from the garden including acers, conifers, and a wide selection of flowering shrubs.
