Honoring Legacy Gardens

  • 16250 Coleman Valley Rd. Occidental, CA 95465 USA (map)

A Conversation with Dan Hinkley, moderated by RG Turner.

Dan Hinkley is an extraordinary teacher, writer, lecturer, naturalist, and gardener. Widely regarded as one of the most influential living plantsmen, his work has shaped how many think about plants, place, and care. Please join us for a special evening at Western Hills Garden as Dan sits down in conversation with noted landscape architect and editor emeritus of Pacific Horticulture, R.G. Turner.

Drawing on his experiences with his own gardens—Heronswood and Windcliff—as well as the many gardens he has advised over the years, Dan will reflect on the role legacy and historic gardens play today, particularly at a moment when many are navigating transition, climate pressure, and generational change.

The conversation will explore how gardens and plant collections are carried forward over time: how continuity is maintained, how long-term care shapes learning and culture, and how stewardship decisions made now ripple forward for future generations. As a member of the Western Hills Garden Horticultural Advisory Committee, R.G. Turner will connect Dan’s reflections to the preservation and curatorial vision currently guiding Western Hills Garden.

$125, space limited.

Proceeds will support speaker stipends and ongoing preservation work at Western Hills Garden.
Light bites and beverages will be served.
Dan Hinkley’s latest book will be available for purchase and signing.
